Medieval Castles, Royal Palaces Become European
Honeymoon Hotels
What should become of a surplus of obsolete medieval
castles, Renaissance palaces, baroque monasteries, and abandoned
convents was an enviable 20th century challenge for the Portuguese
government. Since 1942, more than 22 of these irreplaceable architectural
treasures have been carefully transformed for guests of the royal
country of Portugal. Because they are so very popular with international
travelers and with the Portuguese people themselves, it is always
necessary to make reservations well in advance. Reservations are
made directly through the Empresa Nacional de Turismo.
"Blessed Repose" captures both the meaning
and the essence of the pousadas of Portugal. While there is no American
counterpart to a pousada, imagine a wedding of a royal luxury hotel
and an intimate bed and breakfast inn. There are two types of pousadas
-- regional and historical; rates tend to be somewhat higher for
historical pousadas. Most have spectacular grounds with swimming
pools, tennis courts, and even golf courses. They are a romance
come true for newly weds who dream of a honeymoon in a European
castle or a royal palace. Each tells a story that exposes the very
heart of passionate Portugal -- itself a princess bride's bequest
to her husband and her King. Small -- usually with fewer than 30
rooms -- these magnificent facilities are impressive bases for business
meetings, family reunions, sporting excursions, and celebrations.
A map of the locations of all the pousadas in Portugal is on an
official website.
