Visit Portugal's 'Wild Kingdom'
The Jardim Zoologico de Isboa (Zoological Garden)
is both a romantic and playful place with a collection of some 2,000
animals to view while you stroll or from small trams and rowboats.
It occupies a flower-filled setting on 65 acres within the Park
of Laranjeiras. It's about a 10-minute subway ride from the Rossio.
Tickets are about $11 for adults and children
3-8 are $8.40.
Acquire Your Sea Legs at Aquario Vasco da Gama
Children of all ages will be mesmerized by aquatic
wonders at Portugal's Vasco da Gama Aquarium near Alges on the Cascais
railway. Live exhibits include the eared seals pavilion and a vast
number of tanks that show off fish and other sea creatures from
all over the world. Exhibits include preserved marine invertebrates,
water birds, fish, mammals, and even some of King Carlos I laboratory
equipment.
Children under seven are free and adult tickets
are under $3.
The Show is Astronomical at Planetario Calouste
Gulbenkian
The Calouste Gulbenkian Planetarium is an annex
of Portugal's Maritime Museum. It features astronomical shows on
Wednesday and Thursdays year round several times per day. On Sunday
at 11 a.m. there is a special session for children over six years
of age. Each show lasts 50 minutes. Sunday shows are free and tickets
for other shows are under $3 for adults.
