Kassel has never been short of art. It is all but impossible to imagine the Hessian town without top-class museums, art galleries and exhibitions. But when "Documenta" is staged here every five years, the art world's interest in Kassel is keener than ever. In 1955, Arnold Bode - a painter and professor at Kassel's academy of art - had the idea of staging a "presentation of twentieth century art".

He exhibited works of classical modern art in the Museum Fridericianum, still in ruins at the time, works which had until then rarely been shown in public. His idea was a huge success, and marked the birth of Documenta. Today, it is one of the most important exhibitions of contemporary art world-wide. But even between Documentas, Kassel still attracts a lot of attention in the art world. In Michael Ever's school of organic design you can learn how to use a brush and paints starting from the very basics.

Painting and drawing courses offer both the practice and the theoretical background to master this great art. Kassel's largest and greenest work of art is the Bergpark. This "mountain park" was created above the city by the Hessian landgraves, helped by Mother Nature, as an open-air museum with unique exhibits. And finally we will be visiting the Museum of Sepulchral Culture which deals with the subject of dying, death, burial and remembrance.
