Hamaland extends across the border from Germany into the Netherlands, from the west of Westphalia, right across to the Dutch Achterhoek. The flat countryside here is criss-crossed by canals; windmills and water mills rise above the green meadows. And because Hamaland has so many and such attractive mills, they have been strung together to form the so-called Mill Route, a holiday road with a very special charm of its own.

Following the Mill Route you can learn how grain used to be ground and bread baked. And you come to realise how much effort and care the members of local societies for regional history have invested into their mills, restoring them and bringing them back to life. Hamaland's nature is also well worth seeing, particularly its most exotic members, the flamingos. What may at first sound like some sort of joke, is in fact perfectly true. These pink birds arrived here as refugees from captivity in some zoo or park - and, finding that the habitat suited them, they have stayed on.
