Traces of the Past in Bonn, Germany

Find the best deals on accommodation in Germany here!

When the small provincial town of Bonn became the seat of the West German government in 1949, most people believed this was at best a provisional arrangement. But Bonn established itself and soon became the centre of German politics. Important decisions were made here, statesmen from all over the world came and went.

Fortunately, Bonn never became a big, noisy city, but preserved the quiet charm of an old residential town, and with the departure of the government a transformation began in Bonn. However, the traces of its political past can still be seen today. The former chamber of the German parliament, the Bundestag, designed by the architect Gonter Behnisch and inaugurated in 1993, has opened its doors to interested visitors and all sorts of congresses.

The old waterworks, in which the members of parliament held their sessions between 1989 and 1992, is also steeped in history. Since the case of Gonther Guillaume, it has been a widely known fact that espionage also took place in the old capital. And now there is a very special kind of guided tour, during which visitors can delve into the world of spies and secret agents. Your goal is to retrieve a secret document which has gone missing on the way to its proper destination. With the help of dead letterboxes, talkative informers and encoded messages, this amusing tour takes you all over the former government quarters.
