The Siebengebirge, Germany

Find the best deals on accommodation in Germany here!

It is not clear whether the Siebengebirge, known in the English-speaking world as the "Seven Hills", is so named because travellers approaching the small mountain range from the direction of Cologne can see seven different peaks, or whether in fact the name comes from the Middle High German expression "sieffen", meaning damp.

What is clear though, is that this picturesque region is a wonderful place for holidays. Its forests are criss-crossed by 100 kilometres of footpaths, and Germany's oldest rack railway leads up to the best known peak, the Drachenfels or "Dragon's Rock". The Seven Hills have another superlative to offer, too: they are Germany's oldest nature reserve. In the middle of the Siebengebirge lies Konigswinter, the regional centre, home of the Seven Hills Museum and an ideal starting point for holidaymakers, because from here you can visit all the sights quickly and easily.
