Ecotourism is gaining ground in Germany. The year 2002 has been declared the "Year of Ecotourism", and holiday-makers can look forward to many interesting events, special travel offers and theme holidays focusing on nature. Naturally, the mudflats known as the Wattenmeer play a central part in the programme, because this unique ecosystem is an extremely attractive destination not only for conservationists but also for holiday-makers.

The Vollerwieker Watt off the coast of the Eiderstedt peninsula offers space for extensive walks in the mud flats, and its hinterland provides a resting place for migratory birds passing through. In the neighbouring town of Tonning, the "Multimar Wattforum" offers background information. At the hands-on exhibition about the national park "Schleswig-Holsteinisches Wattenmeer", eleven aquariums and ten theme stations allow visitors to descend into the depths of Neptune's realm themselves. On the other hand, the huge Eider Barrage was built to prevent the surrounding land from descending below the sea. The structure is over 230 meters long and protects the region from the mighty power of the sea, but it is also a popular place to come on outings.
