The German Summer Festivals, Germany

Summer in Germany doesn't only mean bathing in the North Sea or the Baltic, walking in the Alps, or boating along one of the countless inland waterways and lakes. In summer, some of the picturesque backdrops are turned into stages for theatre and dance festivals, for classical concerts and rock events. The Romanesque church ruins of Bad Hersfeld and Heidelberg Castle, two breathtakingly beautiful settings, are the venue for a series of lavish theatre productions.

And as if the plays weren't attractive enough in themselves, their unique surroundings give them an extra special touch. This combination of contemporary drama and bygone architecture draws thousands of visitors every year. And similar numbers are encountered in the north, when the Schleswig Holstein Music Festival fills old barns and mansions with the fans of classical music and jazz. At about the same time, the "Hurricane" rock festival takes place in neighbouring Lower Saxony, on the outskirts of the little town of Schleeoel. This year's programme includes twenty live acts by top international bands.
