For anyone who travels to Cologne, a visit to the Cologne Cathedral is a must. This masterpiece of gothic architecture is considered to be one of the largest and beautiful cathedrals in the world. A special attraction in the cathedral is the Dreikonigsschrein (the Shrine to Three Kings).

Lovers of art and history will also find a lot worth seeing in the area immediately around the cathedral. There is literally one museum after the other in this area. One example is the Roman-German Museum, which was established after the discovery of a Roman villa near the Rhine River. The floor mosaic in the villa's former dining room is the centerpiece of a comprehensive collection of antique art and everyday objects.

Just a stone's throw away is the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, whose collection includes the Cologne industrialist Ludwig's world renowned collection of modern art. Emphasis here is on German Expressionism, American Pop Art, Russian Avantgarde, and international masterpieces of Surrealism. The Wallraf-Richartz-Museum shows works from the Middle Ages through the Baroque period.
