Tranquillity is the essence of this Victorian country house which enjoys superb views from its position on a bluff overlooking the river valley, stretching away to the mediaeval church of Stratford St Mary. The ten spacious bedrooms are stylishly decorated with a sure sense of colour, and have bathrooms that are a special pleasure. Breakfast and light meals are available in the hotel but for lunch and dinner guests eat at Le Talbooth, within easy walking distance or a minute's drive away in the hotel's courtesy car. Featured in Constable's famous painting of Dedham Vale, Le Talbooth is set in an idyllic garden on the banks of the Stour. A delightful 16th century timber framed house, it has been in its time both a weaver's cottage and a tollbooth for horse-drawn river traffic, and for the last 48 years, under the ownership of the Milsom family, has been firmly established as a fine restaurant with an international reputation for excellence. In summer the restaurant's broad terrace with its shady parasols creates a romantic environment for outdoor dining, whilst the cosy lounge and bar with their open fires extend a warm welcome on cold winter days. Situated in the heart of the picturesque 'Constable Country' of the Essex/Suffolk borders, Le Talbooth is an ideal base from which to explore the many sites of interest in a region with historic associations dating back to well before the Roman occupation. |
