LEWIS & CLARK -- OCEAN IN SIGHT

Redmen Hall (360-795-3007) in Skamokawa looks out onto a bay where the explorers traded with the Wahkiakum Indians.  A paddle center offers kayak trips to visitors of all experience levels.

High above the Columbia River, the Expedition first saw the breakers of the Pacific Ocean.  Today, visitors see the same magnificent view at Fort Canby State Park (360-642-3078), located at the east end of the Astoria Bridge.

The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center, perched on a rocky promontory overlooking Cape Disappointment, features one of the state's most comprehensive collections of the Expedition.  Items include original journal entries, photo murals and exhibits on medicine, food and tools used by the explorers.  Guided tours of the 19th century North Head Lighthouse give travelers panoramic vistas of the ocean, the Long Beach Peninsula and other landmarks.  Call 360-642-3078 for center and tour hours and other offerings at Fort Canby State Park.

Historian Rex Ziak gives year-round lectures called "End of the Lewis and Clark Trail.  Call the Pacific County Historical Society (360-875-5224) for details.
