South Central Idaho

The Snake River Plain

It's true you can kayak, climb, raft, and even run the Great Rift. But when you're in the mood for nothing more than a leisurely drive or a memorable bike ride, you'll love the Thousand Springs Scenic Route, Highway 30, from Bliss to Twin Falls.

3.2 MILLION YEAR OLD FOSSILIZED HORSE SKULLS, HAGERMAN FOSSIL BEDS NATIONAL MONUMENT

Look across the Snake River as Highway 30 drops into the Hagerman Valley from Bliss. You'll see the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument, long considered one of the world's premier paleontological sites. Stop to learn about the amazing Hagerman Horse, Idaho's official state fossil. These remarkable zebra-like creatures existed three million years ago on the shores of Lake Idaho. Check at the monument visitor center in Hagerman for information on tours and other special programs.

The Hagerman stretch of the Snake River has long been a favorite among floaters. Several outfitters offer trips blending whitewater excitement with peaceful passages through the canyon. A river float is just about the only way to get a glimpse of Teater's Knoll, the only home in Idaho designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright.

HUNT CAMP

Idaho Played a part in one of the sadder chapters in U.S. History, the incarceration of Japanese-Americans during World War II. Many thousands were sent to the Minidoka War Relocation Center, better known as the Hunt Camp, in Jerome Country. A monument at the camp site honors the people who were detained there, and remnants of the lava-rock waiting room and guard station may still be seen.
