South Central Idaho

History and Culture - Lava Flows and Lost Rivers: High Desert Heaven

CRATERS OF THE MOON

Idaho's first National Monument was created 15,000 years ago when molten rock began oozing through cracks in the Earth's surface. Geologists marvel at the miles of pahoehoe lava, sink holes, lava tubes, cinder & spatter cones and lava bombs. Some areas have collected windblown soil supporting pink monkey flowers, Indian paintbrush, and aspen trees. Visitors can explore this barren world on paved trails or hike the wilderness area with maps, compasses, and very tough shoes! If caving is your game...we have that too!

KINGS BOWL LAVA FIELD & MASSACRE ROCKS STATE PARK

There is only one other landscape that is anything like this and it's halfway around the world in deepest Africa. Drive to the edge of the Kings Bowl Lava Field, a crater created by explosions deep within the Earth. Nearby, look for the remnants of a bubbling lake of molten rock that repeatedly flooded its shores. Before you leave, visit Massacre Rocks State Park where volcanic activity created its raw, rugged appearance.
